In the closing moments of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s first trailer, released a few weeks ago, a title card flashed on the screen, displaying the game’s release date of October 28, 2022, and revealing that players who pre-order the game will get early access to its open beta. This is nothing new to the Call of Duty franchise, with the last few entries like Vanguard and Black Ops: Cold War both offering a few days of exclusive access to the beta for those who had pre-ordered. But thanks to a new leak, the date of Modern Warfare 2’s beta may have been revealed, and it’s earlier than some might think.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s Beta Date Leaked
That being said, August 15 is quite early for a Call of Duty beta. In the past, most Call of Duty betas have occurred just a few weeks before the game’s release, with Cold War’s occurring in October, and Vanguard’s dropping at the end of September. While the main purpose for a beta is to smooth-out any kinks in the game’s online functionality and to test server stress, Call of Duty’s recent betas have seemed more like marketing ploys, intended more as demos for those still on the fence about buying.
With the last two Call of Duty releases, this may have burned Activision a little, as Vanguard and Cold War’s betas were not received all that well by a portion of the fans, likely putting off a few from buying the game at full price on launch day. However, 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s alphas and betas did the exact opposite, showing fans just how much of a departure the entry was from its predecessors and building hype for its upcoming release.
It’s more than possible that Infinity Ward and Activision want to try and recapture that same magic for Modern Warfare’s sequel, and that’s why its beta could be coming out a little earlier than some might have expected. Alternatively, it could be the case that Infinity Ward simply wants the game to be as smooth as possible for its final October release date, and beginning a beta period early is the best way to do that. Regardless, when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s beta does finally come out, PlayStation users will have five days of early access before Xbox and PC players, but with Microsoft acquiring Activision, this could be the last year that PlayStation is favored.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches on October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
