Not to downplay the weapons in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2; most kills will be delivered at the barrel of a gun and these kills are paramount to winning in any mode. However, some of the field upgrades, when they aren’t being deadly on their own, better allow the participants to use and score kills with their favorite weaponry.

10 Tactical Insertion

Marks a location as the next spawn point.

Tactical Insertion rewards players who understand map layouts better than most. As a result, it’s a common field upgrade for veterans of the game who haven’t quite cracked into the elite category. Most hardcore fans will find themselves in this range. It is only useful when the player dies, limiting its usefulness for gamers who frequently go on long killstreaks. But those who know where the best vantage points are will enjoy getting to choose their next location. The real-world ‘Breenbergh’ Hotel might not like being in the game, but players might enjoy spawning on top of it.

9 Deployable Cover

Portable, rapidly-deployable ballistic cover.

Players are generally enjoying the third-person toggle with some who understandably dissent. What nobody disagrees with is the importance of cover in a firefight. The maps frequently lack cover to encourage aggressive and risky gameplay. Deployable cover is on a tiny cooldown and allows gamers to put some cover where none existed before. For those who favor mid-range weapons and push the offensive, there is hardly a better field upgrade.

8 Trophy System

Deployable autonomous defense system that destroys up to three nearby pieces of equipment and projectiles. Some larger targets may take multiple shots.

Running into a trapped building is downright suicide and plays into the defender’s hands. Sadly, many players don’t have the option of safety when they absolutely must capture a point or seize an objective. Trophy system negates the advantage of the defender, destroying the gadgets that would give them an advantage. Aside from changing the crossplay options on console, this is as significant a boost as gamers will find.

7 Battle Rage

Experimental stimulant that delivers an adrenaline rush. Health regenerates quickly, Tactical Equipment is resisted, and Tactical Sprint is constantly refreshed.

If it weren’t for the medium cooldown, this would be the best field upgrade in the game. The design of combat is based on select moments, not general upgrades. Battle Rage allows players to survive with both health and mobility assistance.

By unlocking weapon variants, players will naturally find some guns that require being in a dangerous to be most useful. Battle Rage decreases the risk of these scenarios. The users will naturally win 1v1 encounters so long as Battle Rage is active.

6 Suppression Mine

Trip mine that when triggered, emits a constant sound wave that disrupts enemy vision and slows their movement.

Not too many field upgrades can contend with an opponent using one of the best ultimate perks, but a suppression mine can. Some might be disappointed that the mine isn’t an automatic kill, but the slow movement and inability to see renders the target primed for an easy death. The long cooldown is more than fair for the gadget. It does force players to be located around their mine to capitalize on its detonation, but on select maps, that’s a feature and not a drawback.

5 Loadout Drop

Call in a team-based loadout crate with limited uses. Each player can only use it once.

Do not sleep on support field upgrades. This one benefits both the player and their team, giving each player one team-based boost when they interact with it. These advantages gained can be a chance to swap loadouts, extra primary weapons, and more. For gamers who want to support the best player on their team, they’ll be unleashed with the Loadout Drop.

4 Smoke Airdrop

Call in a line of drones that deploy a smoke wall at a targeted location.

This is the highest-rated long cooldown field upgrade in the game. Players who have been in the voice chat are aware by now that teams coordinate their maneuvers based on the cooldown of a smoke ability.

This massive smoke wall is the best version of smoke. The long cooldown is justifiable due to the sheer advantage it gives to the team that uses it.

3 Portable Radar

Emits a periodic radar ping to detect nearby enemies.

No matter how the franchise progresses, a simple radar remains a staple of every elite player’s loadout. Portable Radar would make this list even if it were a long cooldown, putting it on a medium cooldown makes it top-notch. As important as talent is, players who can see their enemies before they are seen will always be superior to straight-up skills.

2 DDOS

Activates a device that deactivates electronics, and disrupts enemy sensors in the immediate area for a short time.

The DDOS justifies its presence on this list by terminating all electronic devices and sensors for a bit. When used in coordination with an offensive charge or a defensive stand, it virtually assures the outcome of a fight. Top it off with a short cooldown and it’s a reliable and downright unfair advantage.

1 Dead Silence

Temporarily makes footsteps silent. Gun, melee, and throwing knife kills refresh duration.

It’s granted that this field upgrade matters for only a specific style and requires an elite level of skill to use. But the ceiling on Dead Silence is higher than any other choice because it can potentially last forever. Even if the skill does go on cooldown, it’s listed as short. Outside of a radar, players primarily use audio queues to know where opponents are. Robbing them of this ability makes them sitting ducks. When used behind enemy lines, it’s likely to wipe out an entire squad.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
