According to Sony, the most-downloaded game on the PlayStation 4 during November was Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, beating out fellow first-person shooters Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2. Granted, these are only the digital download purchases on PlayStation 4 during the month, but the results are quite telling about gamer choice when it comes to currently available titles.

Over the summer, there was a lot of discussion about how well Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare would perform when it launched, especially considering the incredible amount of hate the announcement trailer received. On the flip side, many gamers saw DICE’s efforts to take the Battlefield series back to World War I instead of following the first-person shooter trend into the future would help Battlefield 1 catapult ahead of Infinite Warfare.

But the numbers don’t lie, at least when it comes to digital sales. Once again, a Call of Duty game is one of the most popular and best-selling titles during the holiday season. And it wouldn’t be surprising to see that continue into December.

That said, Call of Duty total sales are down 50 percent compared to last year. With that in mind, it’s impressive that Infinite Warfare was able to beat out the other shooters. Granted, the current shooter market is a bit more saturated than it was last year. Along with Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2, gamers have choices like Overwatch, Star Wars Battlefront, and Rainbow Six: Siege, which has seen a large influx of players since Ubisoft corrected many of the game’s issues.

Many gamers and critics have pointed out that Infinite Warfare may have performed worse than it did if Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered wasn’t included with the Legacy Edition of the game. In fact, leading up to the games’ release, the hype for Modern Warfare Remastered was far higher than Infinite Warfare in some gaming circles.

With that in mind, this could be the last year Call of Duty dominates the holiday sales season. Of course, many gamers said the same thing the last couple years, but Call of Duty continues to find ways to capture sales and may not disappoint in the coming years.
