While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare quickly became an incredibly popular title, one major and consistent complaint from fans surrounded the mini-map. During the beta sessions, Infinity Ward opted to completely remove it, only bringing it back when a recon based killstreak like the UAV was called in. Feedback from fans ultimately made the team add it back in, but still removed the ability to see enemy fire. The change didn’t completely satisfy fans, but it managed to easy the tension at the very least.

Treyarch is going in a different direction from its sister studio and returns the minimap to its original functionality. The team revealed the change during the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War multiplayer event, not only confirming the minimap is always displayed, but red dots now appear when an enemy player fires their weapon. The minimap also features a fog of war mechanic, originally introduced in Black Ops 4.

Interestingly enough, the reveal also confirmed the return of the compass, a new feature added within Modern Warfare. Players can see it at the top of the screen as expected, highlighting the direction of enemy fire. Its inclusion seems a bit unnecessary considering the minimap’s expanded functionality, but Modern Warfare players will likely appreciate the consistency.

The minimap and compass will likely come in handy during multiplayer matches as the maps appear to be a bit larger than normal as well as have bits of narrative elements explaining why each side is doing what they’re doing. The debut trailer shows off tons of new vehicles typically seen in EA’s rival Battlefield games like tanks, jet-skis, snowmobiles, and more. Set in the 1980s, the maps set in the game’s deniable ops mode will take players to tons of varied locations from South Beach at Night in Miami, to the North Atlantic, and the Ural Mountains.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is set to release on November 13th for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. PS5 version is also in development.
