For a limited time, Blackout, the battle royale mode for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, will be allowing anyone playing Quads the ability to partake in a modified version of the team-based online mode which lets players respawn in the middle of a match. The new mode, called “Down But Not Out,” began its trial period on January 16th for PS4 users, and will run until the end of the month. The way the feature works is as long as any members of a respective team survive up until the next “collapse” (anytime the map shrinks in size), the entire team will be resurrected. This could play heavily into a match’s outcome, since having just one player survive a collapse will result in their entire squad being resurrected to surmount a comeback.
To allow players to actually “respawn” in any type of battle royale game goes against the grain of what established the popularity of the genre in the first place. Thankfully for those who wish to stick to a more traditional experience, the standard Quads playlist will still be available for everyone to choose.
Other popular battle royale games such as Fortnite have also taken a crack at offering limited running game modes that allow players to respawn, such as Team Rumble, or even Disco Domination, which was included during the 14 Days of Fortnite event held last month. The new “Down But Not Out” mode is also meant to compliment the free trial period for Blackout, which is currently available across all systems, as a way for Treyarch to get more players invested in its newest release.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
